My name is Karely Gallegos and I’m a student at the University of Texas at Rio Grande. I’m currently studying Studio Arts in hopes to one day become an illustrator for children's books because I want to one day create stories that people of all ages and backgrounds can immerse themselves in. As a child, I’ve been inspired by various animated movies, including but not limited to Anastasia, Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Spirited Away. While I’m usually reserved and cautious, I am motivated to push myself by listening to music and reading my favorite books. My dream is to one day illustrate a successful book series and do character designs for a major motion picture starring a Latina main character. In my spare time, I like to play video games and binge watch The Office.

For my photo essay, I chose to represent my paternal grandparents’ home, specifically their yard. The reason for choosing this is that this house represents my childhood and how it defined my own characteristics. I wanted to represent the property as a dream-like place in-between worlds. Because I would regularly keep to myself, I would often create my own fantasy worlds and create stories that would play out in my head. Thus, I edited the photos to appear heavily vibrant and saturated to emulate a child’s innocence. I played with perspective on the photos of the toy tractors to have them appear more grand, much like how a small child would see them. On other photos with a worm’s eye view, I added images of creatures. I also took advantage of the vast shrubbery to fashion the illusion of hidden spaces. Overall, I wanted to create a fantasy-like scene that would bring the audience a child-like nostalgia.
For this project, I wanted to portray a day in the life of my family on any given day with the emphasis on the presence of music and my dog and their rolls in our home.
