Course Description:


An introduction to the fundamental terminology, concepts, theory, and application of two-dimensional design. This course is a guided investigation of basic concepts and techniques of visual organization in two-dimensions. Students will develop an awareness of the formal elements of composition, a working knowledge of their fundamental principles and sensitivity towards the interrelationship between form and content. Students will familiarize themselves with the basic vocabulary necessary to verbalize their creative process and critical thinking.

Projects

 

Project 1:

4 Squares

(4) squares using specs provided to create (4) black and white compositions comprised of (4) squares that express the meaning of one of the following words: ORDER, INCREASE, BOLD, CONGESTED, TENSION or PLAYFUL.

Project 2:

Initial Balance, Emphasis and Value

(4) 6 x 6 in. black and white compositions using the initials of your name.

The Elements

  • plate 1 – Asymmetrical with 5 values of grays (can include black and white)
  • plate 2 – Symmetrical/Radial composition or Disrupted Symmetry
  • plate 3 – Asymmetrical with area of emphasis (contrast, isolation, placement)
  • plate 4 – Crystallographic Balance (all over pattern)

Project 3:

Point Line Plane Photo Isolation

6 x 6 in. black and white process book abstracting a gray-scale photograph through point, line and plane.

Project 4:

Primary Color Mixing

18 x 24 in. composition using soft pastels. Use two values of yellow, two values of blue, and two values of red, and white. Black, Secondary and neutral colors are not allowed.

Project 5:

Texture

On a heavy-weight 20 x 30 in. white illustration board mount 6 textures that elicit one of the following emotions: SERENE, ANXIOUS, JUBILANT, CHAOTIC, GROUCHY and CURIOUS.

Project 6:

Self-Portrait Mixed-Media Collage

20 x 30 in. mixed-media collage using traditional and non-traditional materials/found things such as magazines, construction paper, newspaper, cloth, wrapping paper, styrofoam, aluminum foil, plastic, paper towels, yarn, etc… to create a self-portrait.
